This custom sideboard and its matching floating shelves are crafted from select Alder sourced through Valencia Lumber & Panel. I designed the set with a modern Scandinavian sensibility—clean lines, quiet symmetry, and a focus on honest material beauty.
The sideboard features an asymmetric layout: open shelving and a hidden drawer on the left, balanced by a waterfall edge on the right where the grain‑matched boards flow seamlessly from the top down the side. Across the apron, the lumber is carefully aligned so the grain carries uninterrupted across the entire front of the piece.
Even the back of the sideboard is treated with the same level of intention. Custom tongue‑and‑groove boards echo the front’s refinement, making the piece beautiful from every angle—it can be placed proudly in open space, or pushed against a wall.
The floating shelves were built to echo that same quiet refinement. Each shelf is made from two solid Alder boards and shaped to a finished thickness of 1.5 inches and a depth of 12 inches. They mount cleanly to the wall on concealed floating‑shelf brackets, giving them a light, effortless presence while still feeling substantial and grounded. Their grain and tone pair intentionally with the sideboard, creating a cohesive, modern composition across the space.
Both the sideboard and shelves are finished in a water‑based satin polyurethane to preserve the light, natural warmth of alder while keeping the surfaces soft to the touch and quietly luminous.
